What we have to say about Damiel
Following the success of the Cassiel optimised-for-STAX power cords (http://www.stereo-now.co.uk/cassiel.html) I decided to investigate if a range of power cords could be developed for a small range of pre, power and integrated amplifiers to give a noticeable improvement in the overall sound at a reasonable price.
In essence, to offer enthusiasts the lowest price upgrade without having to buy new equipment.
What I had in mind was (simply because it stuck in my mind) for example, through the use of a customised (rather than a one-size-fits-all approach) power cord to see if an old Quad 405 could be given the same sort of bass tightness, tautness and dynamics that a similar vintage 306 could offer. Well, either by luck or good design or both, we struck lucky. There is a Damiel power-cord that does this. And it produces the same magic for older Arcam gear too.
We also have Damiel cords that produce worthwhile improvements for older Krell pre and power amps (not tried these yet with the newer ones) and some Musical Fidelity equipment too.
We've not, sad to report, found any significant improvement when using Damiel power cords with turntables. So for the time being, even though you have a 28-day sale or return facility, we are reluctant to sell Damiel cords for vinyl replay.
With CD players, the degree of improvement is unpredictable. Yes, with a full range of older machines, and some newer ones too, we have heard improvements in dynamics and a reduction in digital glare which in turn has enabled more of the detail to come through. But there seems no clear pattern to this. In some instances the improvement is small and, frankly on an older machine, probably not worth the investment.
In contrast, with some other makes, the improvement has been both immediate and substantial.
Money-back (no questions asked) guarantee
If any Damiel power cord (standard lengths rather than special orders) fails to give you sufficient satisfaction to justify the purchase price, just return it in a similar condition to the way you received it, with the original packing and we will refund the following, with no questions asked:
- Your original purchase price including the postage you paid us
- The cost of your postage back to us
The Damiel models and prices
First, there are three variables to bear in mind, cable length, the type and quality of the terminations and the plating of the metal surfaces of the mains plug and IEC terminations.
Length:
All Damiel cords come as 1.0m, 1.5m and 2.0m lengths. Custom lengths can be supplied on request.
Termination:
At the wall end you can specify:
- MK Tough plug (Deep Cryo Treated)
- MK Tough Plug 8 Microns Silver plate on pins and caps of 13 amp fuse (Deep Cryo Treated)
- MK Tough Plug 8 Microns Gold plate on pins and caps of 13 amp fuse (Deep Cryo Treated)
- Standard Schuko
- Schuko ABL (Long or Medium length)
- Denmark – 3 pin
- Italian 3 pin – Black
- Israel 3 pin
At the equipment end you can specify:
- Large IEC – standard
- Large IEC (Silver/ Rhodium Plated)
- Large IEC (Gold Plated contacts)
- Wattgate 320 IEC
- Male IEC (Pins Silver plated 6 to 8 microns. Deep Cryo Treated)
Pin plating:
Brass, Silver or Gold. Please see explanatory note below
To our ears, on a wide range of equipment, the difference we can hear between any two identical lengths of either of the two levels of construction is very slight indeed.
So, this begs the question; why offer alternative plating options?
Simply because during the run-up to commissioning the prototypes, people in the main said they’d like the option to choose. Like an idiot though, I forgot to ask then which of the three plating options they were most likely to choose! Ho hum.
